Family

Research from the Institute of Fiscal Studies (IFS) has found that in two-parent, opposite-gender families, mothers are more likely to be shouldering the economic costs of coronavirus lockdown because of childcare and household chores.

(You can listen to a podcast on it here.)

Mothers are not only more likely to have lost their jobs (temporarily or permanently), or be working fewer hours, they’re also more likely to be interrupted while working at home than fathers, according to the research.

Interestingly, the IFS says: “In families where the father has lost his job while the mother kept hers, men and women still split housework and childcare responsibilities fairly equally.

“In all other types of households, mothers spend substantially more time on domestic responsibilities.”

I will let you draw your own conclusions on that one.
