The government has announced major changes to duty free shopping when the Brexit transition period ends in December.

From 1 January 2021, those leaving the UK for the EU will be able to buy alcohol and tobacco products at duty-free prices previously only available to those heading outside of the EU.

The government estimates that a 1 litre bottle of 40% ABV spirit could be up to £11.50 cheaper, which is of course a significant saving.

Those coming back from the EU will also be able to bring in duty-free alcohol and tobacco products, with allowances on both products greatly increased.

But, tax-free sales of electronics and clothing will end for those heading to non-EU countries. And overseas visitors won’t be able to claim back VAT if they plan to fly with their purchases – the only way they can buy VAT-free products is by shipping it directly to their home.
