What to read right now…
The energy price cap is going up again from October (from £1,568 to £1,717 per year), which makes it a good time to resurface this piece on how you could save on your energy bills.
Over 140,000 pensioners are going to have to start paying tax on their state pension by 2028 because of the freeze in personal allowance.
Apparently almost a half of Brits aren’t taking their full annual leave. Some said that holidays were too expensive, which is fair. Here are some tips for finding a cheap holiday deal.
But the obvious solution would be to take the time off anyway – it’s paid leave after all – and work on a side hustle.
And finally, an interesting explainer on why CEOs get paid so much in the UK (even if some of them aren’t very good at the job).
The deal that’s a steal…
Lookfantastic* is having a bank holiday sale with lots of discounts across the board.
There are a couple of discount codes you can use for extra savings – FLASH and LFEXTRA – just apply them at checkout.
The codes will only work for selected items though, so do check carefully before you buy.
But even without the discount codes there are some great deals to be found.
One I spotted was the La Roche-Posay travel bundle*, which is currently retailing at £20.50 instead of £41 – so 50% off.
You get the brand’s Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid non-perfumed SPF50+ sun cream, which normally retails at £20* for 50ml, as the full-size main product.
It’s designed for the face, hence the small size.
You also get a 15ml travel-sized version of the same product, plus a 10ml version of the Hyalu B5 serum, which normally retails at £45* for 30ml.
And an actual freebie…
PureGym’s free gym pass offer is here.
Until 26 August 2024, you can get a 3-day pass with access to unlimited classes for free.
Their gyms are generally pretty spacious, and are open 24/7.
Probably best of all is the fact that no credit card or payment details are required for this offer so there’s no danger of signing up to a subscription if you forget to cancel.
If you only do one thing…
The Family Building Society’s Windfall Bond is back.
In my opinion, it’s the best limited access bond out there.
Not only do you get interest on your savings at the Bank of England Bank Rate, you also get entered into a monthly prize draw, with the possibility of winning up to £50,000.
The downside is that you need at least £10,000 to buy the bond.
There’s also no withdrawal allowed – you can only request to close the account with a 35-day notice.
Still, I think it’s a much better way of parking a big chunk of your emergency fund than Premium Bonds.
