What to read right now…

Shell Energy customer? You might like to know that it’s been bought by Octopus – although you won’t see any changes in the foreseeable future, and won’t need to do anything either.

Here’s a bit of insight into the Birmingham City Council bankruptcy, and how it might affect residents.

It’s worrying given that it’s far from the only council on its way to bankruptcy.

The latest Halifax House Price Index has shown that house prices have gone down by a lot – falling at the fastest rate since 2009, apparently.

And finally, holidays from Heathrow are much more expensive than other airports.

The deal that’s a steal…

Just came home from your last holiday? Good news: now is probably one of the best times to book your next holiday.

September is typically the time of the year when airlines have sales, which means a good opportunity to bag cheaper fares, especially on premium seats.

Virgin Atlantic* for example are offering up to £2,000 off Upper Class flights.

On the package holiday front, British Airways* are offering discounts of up to £300, while easyJet* are offering up to £200 off.

You’ll get the best deals on super last minute getaways or those well into next year.

If you only do one thing…

Consider opening Santander’s “limited edition” Easy Access Saver.

It gives a market-leading interest rate of 5.2% AER, but is only available until 17 September – or sooner if it turns out to be hugely popular.

The rate is only available for the first 12 months, and on balances of between £1 and £250,000.
